Lattafa's Maahir Black Edition: A Spicy Leather Fragrance Explored from Every Angle
Launched in 2020 by Lattafa, the renowned Emirati house based in Dubai, Maahir Black Edition is a 100-ml unisex spicy oriental eau de parfum, listed under barcode 6291108730362. Its fragrance profile opens with black pepper, pink pepper, and saffron; unfolds into a heart of cade oil, rockrose, gurjum balm, and rhubarb; and settles into base notes of leather, cedar, guaiac wood, patchouli, moss, and musk. The Fragrantica community rates its longevity at about 8 hours and its sillage as strong, making it ideal for evening wear and the colder months. The darkest of the Maahir fragrances, available as an authentic product at Parfumerie de Dubai.
The Black Thoroughbred
It’s all evident from the packaging: a black lacquered bottle, a black horse, the Black Edition. The opening bursts with spicy notes: black pepper biting, pink pepper more fruity and sparkling, and a saffron A leathery scent with medicinal undertones—the ultimate spice for serious connoisseurs of Eastern fragrances. No welcoming citrus notes, no sweet opening: Black Edition begins where others end.
The heart is the most unique item in the Lattafa catalog. The’juniper oil, juniper tar with the scent of a wood fire, billows its black smoke; the cistus adds its rough, amber-colored resin; the gurjum balm, a balsamic, woody sap, softens the edges; and in the middle of this camp, a rhubarb The green, tangy note acts like a breath of fresh air. It’s this unexpected hint of greenery that keeps the smoke from becoming stifling.
The background showcases the full spectrum of darkness: leather wild, cedar dry, guaiac smoky and creamy, patchouli earthy, foam of undergrowth and musk to tie the whole thing together. Enthusiasts on forums describe it as linear, dark, and stubborn—a twilight vetiver-leather scent that doesn’t set out to please anyone: that’s precisely what gives it its unique status, that of a Lattafa you keep to yourself.
At the stable, every coat color now has its moment in the spotlight: the golden horse’s powdery, floral, oriental coat Maahir For balmy evenings, the minty freshness of Cheval d’Argent Maahir Legacy for the day and the warmth, the sun-kissed curves of Maahir Honor for special occasions. The black thoroughbred is associated with the night, winter, and strong-willed characters.

Bottle design
The silhouette is that of the original Maahir, minus the light: the same body with twisted facets, the same sculpted horse’s head, but the whole thing cast in a All-black lacquered, from the hoof to the mane. The opaque glass gives no hint of the juice inside: the glass absorbs light rather than reflecting it.
The only ones that aren't black are the Arabic calligraphy and the words “MAAHIR” and “BLACK EDITION,” written in silvery white, as if in chalk on a slate. An equestrian monolith, understated and slightly unsettling: exactly what the fragrance inside promises.

Performance & sensations
The Fragrantica community gives it lasts about 8 hours for a strong wake, and the base notes explain this longevity: tar, resins, leather, and patchouli are among the most persistent natural fixatives in perfumery. Feedback from enthusiasts also highlights its linear character: what you smell after an hour will stay with you until morning, without changing.
His kingdom is the night and the cold season : Winter softens its scent, whereas the summer heat would make it overpowering. Use it sparingly: two sprays are more than enough, preferably on winter clothing, where cedar and leather create a scent that lingers for several days. It’s a fragrance for both your coat and your skin—and that’s a compliment.
Lattafa's Maahir Black Edition FAQ
What is cade oil, the signature ingredient of this fragrance?
It is a plant-based tar obtained by heating the wood of the cade juniper, a shrub found in the Mediterranean scrublands. Its scent evokes a wood fire, smoke, and traditionally tanned leather: shepherds once used it to treat their animals and scent their barns. In perfumery, it remains rare because, when used in high concentrations, it overpowers everything else; here, it gives Black Edition its soul of a nighttime campfire—that smoky note that no synthetic wood can imitate.
What's rhubarb doing in such a dark setting?
It’s like an open window in a smoke-filled room. The rhubarb brings a green, vegetal, and almost crunchy tartness that contrasts sharply with the tar and resins at the heart of the fragrance. Without it, cade, rockrose, and gurjum would make the composition feel closed off; with it, the smoke breathes, and the fragrance retains an unexpected burst of freshness. It’s the kind of counterpoint one usually encounters in niche perfumery—rarely at this price point.
Is the Maahir Black Edition hard to wear?
It’s demanding, but not unapproachable. If you’re used to vanilla-based or fresh marine scents, your first encounter will be a surprise: smoke and leather dominate uncompromisingly. But when worn in the right context—a winter evening, a coat, cold weather—it becomes remarkably elegant, reminiscent of a cozy fireplace. A word of advice: try it on your skin for a full day before making up your mind; its mossy base is much more refined than its opening notes.
Does this fragrance rival niche perfumes?
In any case, that’s the comparison often made by enthusiasts: its unique tar-leather-moss profile, which makes no commercial concessions, is more reminiscent of niche brands than mainstream products. Enthusiasts describe it as a niche fragrance sold at Lattafa prices, precisely because it doesn’t seek to please everyone. For those looking to explore smoky leather notes without breaking the bank on a limited-edition bottle, it’s hard to find a better entry point.
When should you wear Maahir Black Edition?
First, winter evenings: dinners, concerts, long walks in the cold—everything that happens after dark with your collar turned up. It also excels as a distinctive fragrance for occasions where you want to make an impression without saying a word: its smoky scent leaves a memorable presence. Avoid wearing it, however, in an open-plan office or in very hot weather—its strong scent would otherwise dominate the space.
